Best Torque-Controlled Actuators for Research Robots
Shortlist HEBI when you want an integrated joint whose documentation explains measured effort and controller behavior. Compare CubeMars AK and mjbots moteus when you can own the joint integration and need access to feedforward torque and impedance commands. Choose a supported ROBOTIS DYNAMIXEL model for a compact, low-load research mechanism where current control can answer your question. Check what the joint actually measures before describing any of these as a source of ground-truth output torque.
This is a documentation-based buying guide. We have not measured the shortlisted joints on a dynamometer. Published motor torque, controller commands and independently verified torque at a robot link are different quantities.

HEBI for a joint with documented effort feedback
HEBI’s control documentation describes effort feedback and strategies for supported actuator families. Read the control strategy for your exact hardware. Ask how joint position, speed, commanded effort and measured effort are made available to the host. Run an experiment where external load changes while the position target is stationary. Use the result to decide which signals are suitable for evaluating compliance, and where the controller saturates. For a multi-joint rig, budget for mechanical brackets, wiring, the supply and the host loop alongside the actuators.
CubeMars AK for an integrated geared joint
CubeMars’s AK MIT mode guide and module driver manual describe different operating modes. Verify the actuator revision and firmware before using example code. Check position and velocity gains, command encoding and whether the field labelled torque is feedforward input or measured output. The AK45-10 V3.0 is one documented variant. It is not a proxy for the entire family. If you are considering a T-Motor-branded assembly, quote the part and firmware the supplier will actually ship rather than assuming interchangeability from similar naming.
mjbots when you need control over the drive setup
The mjbots moteus project documents its controller, protocol and tooling. Treat the drive, motor, mechanical transmission and optional output encoder as a system. Ask which components are part of the quote, and which position the encoder is measuring. Commission the exact drive and motor pair on a fixture with a small current limit. Where a motor is used with a gearbox, assess backlash, efficiency and static friction at the load. A controllable motor current can make useful experiments possible, but the load sees the result of the full mechanical chain.
ROBOTIS for small mechanisms with supported current modes
The ROBOTIS XH430-W210 manual distinguishes current control from current-based position control. That distinction matters for a small gripper or a teaching rig. In the first case, you command current. In the second, you retain a position objective within a current-limited behavior. Check the exact model’s control table and limits. If you need calibrated joint effort in both directions or accurate behavior near zero velocity, compare current readings against a reference load before relying on them.
Specify the job in torque, speed and time
For a simple horizontal lever, 1 kg at 0.25 m gives approximately 2.45 N·m of static torque from gravity. A moving link also has its own weight, acceleration and friction, plus any external interaction. Repeat the calculation across the intended workspace and add the requirements of the worst sustained posture. Then check torque at speed, cooling and the duty cycle. A peak figure useful for a short acceleration can be irrelevant to a joint that must hold a posture for minutes.
Plan for reflected inertia and backdrivability if someone or something may move the joint externally. A high ratio may help a motor produce more output torque while making backdriving harder. The control loop also depends on the bus, host timing and what happens when messages are late. Count the telemetry from every joint at the intended rates before assuming a one-joint demo will scale.
Run an acceptance test before duplicating the design
- Test on a restrained fixture with current, velocity and travel limits appropriate to the rig. Verify units and sign before fitting a long lever.
- Apply known loads in both directions and compare reference output torque against the reported estimate. Look at the behavior close to zero speed.
- Run a representative duty cycle and log supply voltage, temperature, command and measured response. Check how the power system handles regeneration.
- Deliberately lose host communication under safe fixture conditions. Document the watchdog behavior and how an operator stops the system independently.
- Save the configuration and firmware versions with your logs.

FAQ
Is commanded torque the same as torque at the joint?
No. A command can be limited or modified by the controller. Transmission losses and dynamics also affect output. Use the sensing and calibration appropriate to the question.
Can I use current control for impedance experiments?
Yes, when the architecture and load allow it. The result depends on tuning, timing, mechanics and the validity of your current-to-torque estimate.
Why might I want an output encoder?
It can observe joint movement after the transmission, which can matter when backlash or compliance separates motor position from load position. It does not measure torque by itself.
Should I choose the actuator with the highest peak torque?
Choose for the sustained load, speed, temperature and controllability required. Confirm the permitted duration and conditions before counting on a peak rating.
